Have the shapes tool its independent color and line selection.
The shapes tool uses at the moment the current color and line variant from the previously used pen. If you want another color or make it dotted that's fine.
BUT if you change back to pen, the pen adapted the settings.
You would have to change everything back from like orange dotted to blue single line before you could write again if you chose that for the shape.
