Completely agree. It’s crazy that it keeps your tabs open but you can’t access them without opening something.

You don’t even need a button. Just tap the screen once to make it go away. You should be able to scroll with a hidden toolbar in edit mode, then just tap the screen to bring up all the options. Way less capable apps have this feature.
