Hello! We’re excited to let you know that we’ve updated the Text tool and introduced a new dedicated floating menu for text boxes, including more customization options.
One of the new tools is Pin Text Tool — when enabled, it keeps the Text tool active so you can create multiple text boxes continuously without having to reselect it each time.
This is especially helpful when you're focused on adding or adjusting text in your notes. The pin will automatically turn off once you switch to another tool.
Feel free to try it out and let us know how it works for you!
This improvement is available in the latest Apple update.

I do not enjoy the new toolbar as it is very cumbersome. It seems to take up more screen real estate since the tools are in the main bar but I mainly use the writing feature which brings up another toolbar below. I would prefer for the main toolbar to expand when I use drawing tools instead of another dropdown bar. Additionally, I use two document open side by side and screenshot heavily for medical school lectures; when I return to the main note and click the writing tool it defaults to the eraser which is not intuitive as I wouldn't return to this note to start erasing immediately, I am looking to write/draw. Lastly, the lasso tool requires too many steps take a screenshot. I would prefer it to default for a screenshot that copies to clipboard after I highlight a section and click the camera (vs clicking camera>export>copy)

UPVOTED
I use one template for note taking (lined/grid) then another for publishing the notes (blank). I have to manually change the template on 20+ pages of notes, one at a time. -

I will echo this, as a medical student I take A LOT of screenshots from textbook and lecture PDFs. I often have to make a copy of the entire note to use side by side and quickly pull screenshots from it. Would be ideal to take screenshots easier!

I agree with this comment, I review many peer reviewed journals in the app and do lots of text highlighting. It would be ideal if when you held the highlighter feature such as to draw a straight line, it would convert to text highlight automatically so that you can just drag across the text. Additionally, for papers with 2 or 3 columns, it would be nice if the highlighter just selected text within that relevant column and did not jump over to the next.

Upvote! Goodnotes is not equipped to search for phrases which makes it difficult when you are trying to narrow down a repetitive word. I often use textbooks in medical school that are lengthy and it is difficult to find specific conditions due to overlap.
Additionally, once the app finds what you are looking for and you click from the sidebar, it takes you to the correct page but not where the text is. I end up having to zoom out to see the whole page and try to tease out what it actually found since I use highlighting liberally throughout my notes. Included a screenshot for reference; it would be nice to have the app zoom you in to that section or make the search more obvious.
