Optimize PDF Size to Export
Optimize PDF Export Size, notes with three photos have more than 10 MB in one page! Now we use other Apps to optimize the exported PDF, it would be great to control this in Goodnotes

Can we automatically compress files within the app so they don’t take up large storage space?

File Size Too Large (Add Compress File Size). This is goodnotes' biggest flaw. It is so hard to export to email because the file sizes are ALWAYS above maximum. I have to save to my ipad storage and manually compress because GoodNotes does not provide that option.
Notability does not have this problem! I may change.

It's ridiculous GoodNotes still has this issue in 2025. It's not hard to compress files. I have to go and add it to my storage then go and compress it on a 3rd party website but its such a waste of time. Notability doesn't have this problem!

I’ve noticed that when exporting a PDF with Handwriting Recognition enabled in GoodNotes, the file size becomes significantly larger if the Recognition Language is set to Japanese and includes handwritten Japanese text. In many cases, the file size increases by more than five times, depending on the document content.
For comparison, when I scan a Japanese document using a document scanner and apply OCR with Adobe Acrobat (Windows version), the resulting PDF file size does not increase as drastically. This suggests that the file size issue when adding transparent Japanese text to PDFs may not be unavoidable.
I believe the excessive size might be due to inefficient font subsetting, especially given that CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) characters often require larger font files than English text. When I analyzed the file size in Adobe Acrobat, I found that fonts accounted for about 74% of the total file size, which likely contributes to this issue.
It would be ideal if PDFs exported with Japanese handwriting recognition were optimized to reduce file size, particularly by addressing font subsetting methods for CJK characters.

Exporting to PDF format creates unnecessary huge file sizes. Allow to save / export to Black & White, or with lower resolution, to minimize PDF file sizes.

Problem: I’m used to write down a few sentences as P.S. on original pdf files. When I export the edited file as pdf its size increases ~ 800%.
Solution: Algorithm optimization for compression for simple editing on already original files.

This is just crazy, considering Apple to be such a premium company and goodnotes being one of the most recommended apps in that field. There are so many flaws, which I would never find on a similar Android app.

Yeah, same here. I'm two weeks into lecture and already have over one GB of files, the files are getting too big to handle. iPad is stuttering. Please implement low quality pdf export please and/or some sort of live compression.

I read somewhere that Goodnotes at the moment only takes advantage of the iOS native PDF generating API which doesn't allow compression. Would be essential for our work if Goodnotes would make use of a more sophisticated built-in PDF API which at least allows levels of compression on export, maybe compressed / smaller file sizes of native goodnotes documents as well as we also export native goodnotes documents as plan status.

I also run into the problem of file sizes being too large. I use GoodNotes for work and take notes, fill out forms and annotate pictures for clients. I import a pdf brochure and try to email the package to the client but it’s huge! It would be so helpful to be able to change quality, or optimize file size when exporting/emailing

This is a practical solution which uses a simple LaTeX script to compile all exported images from a GoodNotes notebook into a lower memory pdf. You can Export your notebook as a set of images by going to "Export ALL", selecting the 'Image' format, then under options select "export images as zip file"

Reduce notebook file size, because when the notebooks get more and more after time it’s uses a lot of storage.
