We’re excited to announce that we have completed this feature. It is now available in the update GoodNotes 5.3 for iPadOS (13.1).
With the update, we added full support for iPadOS’ multiple windows. It lets you do much more than viewing two documents side by side. To read everything you need to know about opening multiple documents, please visit goodnotes.com/ipad-os.
How to open a new window:
You can now open GoodNotes in multiple windows to view two documents side by side, view two pages of the same document in Split View, or pair it with other apps in spaces across your entire system. To open a new window, drag any of the elements listed below to the side of your screen:

In GoodNotes 5 we implemented the option to create infinite subfolders to replace the concept of “categories” in GoodNotes 4. Consider using multiple documents in a subfolders instead of adding everything to one notebook. If you want to further divide your notebook internally, you can use bookmarks or custom outlines to label your pages.

We’re sorry to hear about the negative experiences you have with GoodNotes 5 and are thankful that you took the time to write such lengthy and detailed feedback.
We’re optimizing the ink algorithm continuously and haven’t heard many complaints about the smoothness in recent times so we’d like to take a closer look at your case. Would you be able to share a comparison video of how it looks like when you write in GoodNotes 4 vs GoodNotes 5 to support@goodnotes.com? That will be very helpful for us. Please refer to this review, so that we know it is you.Marten supported this idea · -
