Paper 53 (old version) implemented this pretty cleanly so that when a user would hold down a line (like when we want to draw a straight line with pen tool), gray arrows would pop up. If you tapped the gray arrow, it would appear as an arrowhead, but if you did tap it when it was gray, it would disappear.

I was thinking that since the audio recording button replaced the bookmark button, at least give users the option to choose which button they would want to appear in settings. Personally, I don't think I will ever use the audio recording feature but use bookmarks very often.
