[Sep 2025 Launch] New Toolbar Suggestions
Thread for feedback on the new toolbar.
Feel free to share any bugs or suggestions for improvement regarding the updated toolbar.
Thank you so much for sharing your feedback on the toolbar updates. Over time, we’ve addressed most of the points raised, and all the toolbar improvements we’ve shared and released are listed here.
Since this thread includes multiple ideas, some of which have already been addressed, it’s challenging to respond to each one individually or determine which topics need further attention. To keep the forum organized, we’ll be closing this topic for now.
If you have multiple ideas and would like them to be actionable, we recommend sharing them in separate threads (1 feature request = 1 thread). This helps other community members discover, discuss, and vote on ideas, and allows us to better understand which improvements are most important to you. We also recommend checking for similar existing ideas and adding your vote to strengthen them.
Please also review the forum for existing similar ideas and add your vote to consolidate feedback.
Once a feature goes live, we’ll update the relevant thread, and you’ll receive an email notification from the portal.
We look forward to hearing your ideas!

Please give as an option to revert to our previous version. As you can see, majority of users are not satisfied with the new update.

the new toolbar update is awful it genuinely has ruined my week. i dislike how i now have to scroll to see my different pen colours and that i must have the pencil, tape and other stuff on it when i never use it and want those features to be off. i would appreciate tool bar customisation for the pens and also to have all the pens and other tools in the same line again. i dont like how the lasso tool isn’t next to the pens and nothing feels easy access anymore. it feels like the apps de-evolving and i am tempted to download another if these changes aren’t made. sorry this is kinda mean im just an everyday goodnotes user and would love to go back to the old model. also you have to click more stuff to change the lasso which doesn’t make sense. the last model was way more efficient

Hello GoodNotes team,
First of all, I want to say that I truly love using GoodNotes 6. It has made studying and taking lecture notes so much more enjoyable and efficient. I especially appreciate how I can switch between handwriting and typing whenever I need.
However, the new floating text toolbar has made typing lectures significantly slower and less convenient. The toolbar often covers my text, and I have to readjust or reopen settings every time I type. The buttons are also quite small, and I can no longer lock or keep my preferred font style as before.
Could you please consider bringing back the old, fixed text toolbar option? The new design may look modern, but it’s much less practical for long typing sessions.
Thank you for your great work so far, and I really hope this feature can be improved in a future update.
Best regards

This update is so unnecessary and is destroying my studying efficiency. PLEASE switch it back or I will be forced to use an entirely different company that does not change their interface drastically so I can STAY used to something.

Also I have the Pencil Pro which had this "Squeeze" Feature. Since I was able to customize the layout of my tools I could have the lasso tool be one of the priority tools. But now its hidden all the way back! It makes me so slow!!!

This update is horrible. I want the old toolbar! Definitely second guessing Goodnotes now - this update is slowing me down.

floating toolbar is horrible - at least make it so we can choose to have it floating or back to how it was. i don’t want the toolbar COVERING MY DOCUMENTS WHILE IM TRYING TO WRITE AND HAVING TO MOVE IT ARE WE SERIOUS

worst update ever, there are so many flaws in this app but instead of working of those they focus on making everything else worse as well

This update is horrible I wish there was a way to get the old toolbar back.

I agree the new tool bar is not efficient. I wish apps would stop downgrading their function

Why do you have to press more buttons to get to the tool you want?? Not only is there less customization, but if I want to switch because the lasso/text/etc tool and the highlighter, for example, I have to press the handwriting tool and then the tool that I want. Before the update you could customize the toolbar and just hide the ones you don’t want, now there’s tool categories that you can’t modify and have to work harder to switch tools!
I agree with what everyone is saying about the toolbar update, and it sucks because I do thinks it’s cuter and I like that the icons reflect the color of the tool. But now it’s just not user-friendly at all.

The latest update sacrifices the utility of the old toolbar in favor of a "minimal" interface, which results in an unwieldy experience. A lot of key features are missing or modified to be much less user-friendly.
Some examples which others have voiced:
* Bookmark option missing. Now I would have to open up the sidebar or three-dot menu to bookmark, which is a hassle that did not exist before.
* Customization option of current tool. It was good before when it was contained within the one bar, such as the pen. It was nice to choose between the different tools like pen, highlighter, since they serve distinct functions and I use them often. Now, the menu is unwieldy as these brushes are coalesced together, and the customization palette pops up below as a second row. The old setup worked much better.
* Text box. Similar to above, the new text functionality is unwieldy, unflexible, and unresponsive. The new functionality also presents constraints. After typing one box, it jumps to the select tool; this is counterproductive if I am trying to make multiple text boxes! This behavior did not occur before. The old UI/functionality was more conducive to typing.
* Shape snap: the previous version allowed the user to draw a shape and by hitting undo, leave behind the filled in section without the outline. Now that this option is not available anymore, there is not a similarly convenient way to highlight-box neatly. The shape snap also seems more restrictive.Goodnotes has great functionality, but this toolbar update has significantly reduced its useability. I would greatly appreciate the option to revert back to the previous toolbar UI and functionalities/behaviors.

This needs to be changed, as well as the insane change to needlessly remove the add bookmark feature and hide it behind three dots. This has made using the app for me so much more of a hassle and is leading me to consider alternatives.

I'm sorry to say that but this has been an exercise of change for the sake of it. I think the app should be designed for effizient use, that's why I chose Goodnotes in the first place. Currently it tries being to "clean" and by that putting in extra steps. I think it's missing the entire point of the app. The most important part is taking notes with the pen and that currently has been downgraded heavily in it's experience. It's so bad that I took the time to write this. Please bring the old menu bar back. Some formulas just work. Change is not always for the better. Gladly give new menu ideas, the app got to evolve, maybe get an beta option and get customer feedback in the app? It might help with such major frustration points.

The new tool bar is so hard to navigate. It’s so frustrating when you’re just trying to write your notes and now you have to deal with a complicated tool bar . There was nothing wrong with the old one matter of fact I loved it . At least give us the option to switch tool bars so that we can choose for ourselves.
