[Sep 2025 Launch] New Toolbar Suggestions
Thread for feedback on the new toolbar.
Feel free to share any bugs or suggestions for improvement regarding the updated toolbar.
Hello! We’re excited to let you know that we’ve updated the Text tool and introduced a new dedicated floating menu for text boxes, including more customization options.
One of the new tools is Pin Text Tool — when enabled, it keeps the Text tool active so you can create multiple text boxes continuously without having to reselect it each time.
This is especially helpful when you're focused on adding or adjusting text in your notes. The pin will automatically turn off once you switch to another tool.
Feel free to try it out and let us know how it works for you!
This improvement is available in the latest Apple update.

The floating toolbar now blocks the text on the PDFs I'm trying to annotate, its extremely frustrating and makes everything I'm doing take double the time. Paired with the constant defaulting to the lasso tool so you're constantly having to move it back to text when you're making notes in text boxes means I'm spending multiple times the amount of time editing a simple document. Either get rid of these or allow users to define which they prefer or I'll have to find a new tool.

The new toolbar is extremely frustrating. I preferred having all the tools I actually use docked to the top. Now changing pen colors is 3x the clicks with drop-down menus cluttered up by unwanted tools that you can no longer hide. Why *remove* functionality that was already working perfectly??? Please give a choice to revert or I will be cancelling my subscription and looking elsewhere.

When will u bring the old toolbar @GOODNOTES? If u can’t then give me option to revert to 6 edi. Your new update completely destroyed my productivity. Who told u to do auto update? I want all the tools of the old toolbar. Bring it ASAP. If don’t bring I will see it as fraud done by your company.

In the same way, I regret to have to click 2 times to open the zoom screen, It’s too much because I often switch between the two states. I would like an option for a direct acces on the toolbar (and why not a kind of shortcut with for exemple two taps with two fingers on the screen)

Goodnotes should just give people the choice. I know people who like it, and people who don't, let people choose if they want the new one or the legacy one. When using goodnotes for any math/stem course, the new bar is so clunky and so many things are so much harder to access. If you're just freewriting, then sure this is fine because it's more minimal, but so many people use goodnotes for more than just freewriting. I personally chose to use goodnotes because of all the amazing tools it has and the fact they were all super easy to use and switch between, but now these tools are hidden and more restrictive. I don't like that there is now a single pen size for the shapes tool, and I really don't like that things take longer to access. In fast-paced lectures, the legacy toolbar made it super easy to jump between tools, colours, pen sizes, etc. I truly don't understand why goodnotes would come out with an update this is more restrictive and makes its features more difficult to access or use.

I have a few suggestions since the new update has affected my learning. 1 - Please provide an option to change the toolbar back to the old version (Goodnotes 6). 2 - Please bring back the top bar with the keyboard, mic and pencil button. 3 - Make it so when we are typing on the full page we can change the font. 4 - Get rid of the feature where you have to long hold to start typing full page. The top keyboard button was so much more accessible. 5 - Fix the highlight function. Whenever i now highlight something the highlighter pen goes on top of my text and doesn’t highlight my text. It’s annoying and at that point, scrap the whole function. Goodnotes 6 worked better. 6 - Make it a function when i edit a text box it can still be at the toolbar. I liked that. 7 - Fix the shapes. Its glitchy and laggy and i cant draw certain shapes. 8 - If this isn’t possible give us an option to have goodnotes 6 back. Goodnotes 5 was still available when goodnotes 6 was out. Also when im typing using the text box the text box format doesn’t go away. Its the most annoying thing ever and i want the text box features to go back to the toolbar. I also cant move around my textbox, its very laggy and hard to do. Please make it an option to bring back goodnotes 6 because its really making me frustrated. Its been really hard for me to complete my schoolwork. I have exams soon that determine if i go to university or not and all of my notes are on goodnotes.

The new toolbar is far less convenient to use. It feels clunky having to switch between the shape/diagram tool, lasso/select, and regular writing. It was far easier before, and now it is very difficult for me to use in class to take quick notes.

I believe we should get to choose individually which tools we want to be shown, and which tools to hide. Notability does that. I still believe Notability is superior than Goodnotes, and the only reason I’m using Goodnotes is because my Notability crashes after importing so many files for several years

I really don’t like the new update at all — it honestly makes me so sad that we always have to just accept these big changes from brands without the option to keep the old version. I still love Goodnotes, but updates like this make me start looking for alternatives.
The new toolbar feels cluttered and inconvenient — all the extra clicks are time-consuming and frustrating. Removing the 0.5 line spacing was also a bad move; the automatic option never works properly, and now nothing feels as smooth or precise as before.
I also don’t understand why the undo buttons are now below the toolbar — it just takes up space and makes the document area smaller. Why change what was already working perfectly?
From reading other comments, it’s clear that many of us just want Goodnotes to feel like home again — familiar, simple, and reliable. I really hope you’ll consider these concerns, because I’d be so sad to have to leave Goodnotes after loving it for so long. -

Since I wasn’t able to send my reply by email, I’m sending it here instead.
As shown in this video, when I’m viewing two screens and start recording on one of them, if I close or switch pages on the other (unrelated) tab, the recording on the original page stops.
I’d like this to be fixed as soon as possible. -

The new update is horrible. At least make it possible to change back to the old UX with a non floating bar with ALL tools there.
Give me back the clock as a separate tool that is not hidden behind a drop down menu. I need clock for time tracking. Clock is doing more work in my document than the sticker, shapes and post it tools combined. Clock deserves to be treated as a full member of the team. If clock is not coming back to grace until 20th the next month, I'll stop using Goodnotes.

I’m really not a fan of the new toolbar. I would love to have the option to keep all tools listed at the top instead of having that floating toolbar appear every time I switch between tools (for example, from the lasso to the pen).
Honestly, this new floating toolbar is EXTREMELY distracting. It gets in the way of my view and adds unnecessary clicks to remove it each time. The previous layout, with all tools visible and customizable at the top, was far more efficient and user-friendly.
I have to admit, the new design frustrates me so much that I’ve lost motivation to keep using the app. I truly hope this issue can be addressed soon. It’s urgent. In case someone feels the same about the toolbar and knows a good alternative app. Feel free to comment it.

PLEASE bring back the old toolbar. The floating toolbar is so in the way, and what used to take 1 click now takes 5. I cannot easily switch back and forth anymore, which was imperative to my workflow. I was in the middle of studying when it suddenly updated and it's completely thrown me off and wasted my time. I even made an account here just to complain because I'm so outraged. I will switch to another app if this isn't fixed.

An Update can be so bad & Premature & untested , if some one never saw this update , will have a hard time believing. If self destruction had a face.

Give me my old toolbar. I hate this new toolbar. Straight line is missing. Floating pencil option in annoying. I want what I given money for. It's hampering my productivity before my exm. Revert to old toolbar ASAP. I am extremely frustrated and angry. Change my toolbar @GOODNOTES..

When I work in my planner and in my study notebooks, it doesn't let me change my handwriting to a font of my choice, it's a lot of work; I use my Apple Pencil, I write, and when I want to change what I wrote with my handwriting (which looks horrible) to a font of my choice: it's a lot of work to change it, it's uncomfortable when I use the app frequently for my notes and studies. Before you had it in the toolbar and it was much easier to work that way.

Why was my post deleted and merged with this one?
Moreover, my point wasn't reflected, so I'm posting again.① Toolbar
Please restore the history that was on the right side of the element, image, and sticker buttons (as shown in the image1).And after using this new version for a month, I've noticed that various functions can no longer be operated intuitively.
❶Text tool
Previously, even while entering text, you could change the text length by dragging the dot (・). Now, you can only do this after finishing text input.
Also, the pop-up menu allowing options like "Copy/Paste/Paste and Match Style" no longer appears for text functions, making it harder to use. (It does appear for pen functions, etc.)
The text tool probably uses icons to indicate functions, like in Image 2, but there's no copy or cut option, making it confusing. Why was this changed?❷ Eraser behavior after auto-deselection
As explained in Image 3, previously, after writing with the pen and erasing with the eraser, you could return to the pen tool. Even if you selected another function and then returned to the pen tool, you could continue writing with the pen immediately.
However, now, after writing with the pen and erasing with the eraser, if you switch back to the pen, select another function, and then return to the pen function, it reverts to the eraser. This significantly degrades usability.
Isn't this a drawback of merging the pen tools? Please revert this immediately. We request prompt improvement.

しかも私の言いたいことが反映されないままに、なのでもう一度投稿します。① Toolbar
Please restore the history that was on the right side of the element, image, and sticker buttons (as shown in the image1).そして、この新しいバージョンをこの1ヶ月使ってみて、さまざまな機能が直感的な操作で行えなくなっていることに気づきました。
❶Text tool
